Terence Crawford Is The BWAA’s New No. 1 Pound-For-Pound King
For the first time since December 2019, Canelo Alvarez has been unseated atop the Boxing Writers Association of America’s quarterly top-10 pound-for-pound poll.
After his loss to WBA light heavyweight Dmitry Bivol, Alvarez dropped to No. 4 and has been replaced as the BWAA’s new No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, WBO welterweight world champion Terence Crawford.
The BWAA’s pound-for-pound polls, which was formerly held bimonthly and now will be held quarterly, beginning in 2022, are selected by BWAA members from respected news outlets and is broken down based on a descending points system, with a first-place vote receiving 10 points, a second-place vote receiving nine points and so on. Ties go to the fighter with the most votes. All BWAA members, full and auxiliary, can send their top-10 pound-for-pound votes in quarterly to JSantoliquitoBWAA@yahoo.com.
The next deadline will be Friday, September 10, 2022, with the results posted later that month.
Since the last vote, much has changed.
World bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue rises from No. 5 to No. 2, based on his dominance over future Hall of Famer Nonito Donaire, with WBA/IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk maintaining his place at No. 3, and with Alvarez dropping to No. 4, that bumps IBF/WBC/WBA welterweight world champion Errol Spence Jr. dropping to No. 5. World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury stays at No. 6, while Bivol enters the BWAA pound-for-pound poll for the first time at No. 7, along with IBF/WBO/WBC light heavyweight world champ Artur Beterbiev debuting at No. 8, world junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo debuting at No. 9, and lightweight world champion Devin Haney and junior lightweight world Shakur Stevenson came in a tie for No. 10.
Out goes world junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor, previously No. 7, lightweight contender and former BWAA pound-for-pound No. 1 Vasiliy Lomachenko, world junior bantamweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada and lightweight contender Tank Davis, who were ranked No. 9 and 10, respectively, in the last poll.
